Our Maui Trip aka Steve & Shannon's Wedding

View from the hotel
Thanks to Steve and Shannon getting married in Maui, Steph and I got nearly a week, kid-free, in Maui. Ellie and Lukas went out to Oakdale to be with Grandma and Papa, along with Hannah and Freddy.
Fun plane ride to start

We flew out with Mike and Adrianna, Uncle Steve, Jenn, Aunt Cathy and Bob. The flight over was uneventful, except for the anticipation of fun, and they rum and pineapple drinks. Mike and I actually got the last two small bottles of rum. Running out of things was going to be a theme to this trip.

Once we arrived Steph and I got our rental car, a convertible, which we were happy to get just a week before the trip on Priceline for about 75% off. The total price ended up being the same as a regular car, but with more breeze.
Fun with the top down

We stayed in Wailea, which was nice, but quiet. The hotel, the Marriott, had a couple nice pools and was just a short walk down a path to the beach, so everything you needed was right there.

Steph, Mike, Adrianna and I drove to Hana the first full day we were there, but we started the day at the restaurant with a Loco Moco. The drive to Hana was fun. Had the top down, we eventually figured out the Bluetooth so Mike was DJ for the day, all good.

Side note, the book Maui Revealed, I think that’s what it’s called. It’s blue, and sold everywhere was golden, especially on our drive to Hana.

Waterfalls
Steph navigated us to mile 6.5. Yes, in Hawaii many of the mile markers are .5. We pulled off to the side of the road and started to hike through the forest, because that’s what the book said to do. We quickly learned that the book was always right. We hiked to a river, hopped around there for a bit, then hiked through the bamboo jungle to some waterfalls. The book gave great descriptions on exactly where to hike, which paths to take, etc. The falls were cool, the hike was hot. The girls took advantage of the water with a swim.
Swimming near the falls

We had some great fish tacos around mile 22. We drove through Hana on our way to the 7 Pools. We anticipated getting there, swimming in the pools, jumping off rocks, etc. However, when we go to the pools we were greeted with, “Sorry, no swimming today.” The wet winter had turned the pools into more of a group of rapids, so we couldn’t swim. Total bummer. A full day of driving and no payoff at the end. So we went back.

Golfing Old Blue
Friday the guys golfed the Old Blue Course at Wailea. The golf game was terrible, thankfully the company and the views were awesome.

After golf was the rehearsal dinner at a restaurant in the Marriott, turns out that one of the contestants from Top Chef was the Chef there and Steph and I got to go meet him in the kitchen, so that was cool.

Steph with Top Chef contestant Chef Sheldon
Saturday was the wedding and all the main points went well. The toughest part, being in long pants and longs sleeves. Now the shirt sleeves were rolled up, but it was still really hot. Sweating a lot hot. But the ceremony was very nice.

The reception was nice as well. Really good food at Tommy Bahamas, Mike’s best man speech went really well, he nailed it. There was a bride-groom cake fight. And plenty to drink.

Skipping back a couple days. Alan had a Loco Moco 6 out of 7 days. On one of the days I joined him in having one, and Mike came down a few minutes later and ordered one. The waitress came back to our table and said they ran out and Alan and I got the last two. This is funny on many levels, the first is, what exactly do you run out of??? The second, the expression on Mike’s face was priceless!

Also, one night while we were out I ordered a Mojito, only to have the waitress come back and tell us, they had run out of mint. I told you this was a trip of things running out.

On Sunday after the wedding, Steph and I took another drive. This time up past Kannapali to Kapalua. We followed the book again and hiked down some cliffs to the edge of the water where there was a blowhole, which was cool. The power of the water was certainly on display. The cliffs, the water, the hike, everything was very fun.

We then drove down to Kannapali and spent the afternoon on the beach. I swam out to Black Rock and took my chances jumping off. Steph got some pictures.

We spent much of the rest of the time at the pool and the beach. We had a great time meeting Shannon’s family and friends.

And because I told her I’d tell the story, although she’ll no doubt deny it, Adrianna got confused by Courthouse and Whorehouse. Call it the multiple shots of Jamison, or any of the other fruity drinks that were being served, but she tried to say that her and Mike should just skip their “wedding ceremony and go to the courthouse” then use all the money on a honeymoon to Borah Borah. However, what she said, was “We should just skip the ceremony and go to the whorehouse.” Which left everyone in stitches from the laughter.

Can someone point me to the gym?

Hiking near Kapalua

Sure, cliff diving sounds fun
