For Christmas this year, Santa balanced the gender scales in our house, we are now 3 boys and 3 girls thanks to the addition of Jedi.

We are hoping the Force is strong with him.

Lake Placid Trip: The Backstory

As the story goes, when I was 4-years-old I was mesmerized by the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, yes the Miracle on Ice hockey team, but also by the Luge. I don't know why, but every 4 years when the Winter Olympics come around, my parents always told me, "When you were little you loved to watch the luge." Fast forward nearly four decades and I see a posting for a luge clinic in Palo Alto for kids 9-13. It was called a sledder search and I thought it would be a fun experience for Ellie to go "sled" in Palo Alto, then the next time the Winter Olympics came around, she could say "I tried that." We went to Palo Alto in early September, Ellie got geared up and went down the hill on her street sled. It wasn't pretty, at least I didn't think it was. She crashed into the hay bails once, got up pretty upset -- mainly because she wasn't excellent at it right away. She left Palo Alto nearly in tears because she couldn't be great at it. ...

RV Road Trip. Ohio To CA. Travel Day 1.

Official day one of the road trip was full of cool stuff, and needed a little flexibility late in the day, but it worked out. Haidyn (Ohio), Ellie (CA). Both Team USA Luge Steve got us donuts from White House Donuts in Youngstown, which is a local favorite, and I will say they were very good. Donuts were more cake-like, but had excellent frosting. We loaded up the RV with our stuff and got on the road at 9:20, which was pretty close to when we wanted to get started. We made the 50 minute drive to West Farmington to see Ellie’s luge teammate Haidyn. They live on a 5 acker farm and it was exactly like I would picture Ohio farm land, very sprawling, very green, very nice. In fact, back to our drive from Pittsburgh yesterday, for having the reputation of a factory and steel town the drive from Pittsburgh to Ohio, and all through Ohio was very green. Travel Day to Lake Placid

Sometime you know it's early in the morning. Like, the sun isn't up yet, or, not many cars on the road. You know you're up really early when the newspaper hasn't even been delivered and the overnight work crews on the freeway are still working away. That's how early we had to get up. 6:00 a.m. flight from SFO, meant being there just before 5:00 a.m., meant leaving the house around 4:00, meant getting up around 3:30 a.m. But we did it, up early, out the door and made it in plenty of time for our flight. Ellie and I flew from SFO to Chicago, then onto Albany. And if you know our history with Albany airport, nothing was guaranteed. But we arrived on time. Bags arrived on time. So getting into Albany was nice and easy. We stayed the night at a hotel near the airport, then grabbed the shuttle to the Training Center on Sunday, along with a few other girls who had flown in Sunday morning.
