Lake Placid: The Final Day and Return Home

Day 4 in Lake Placid was much of the same. Lots of snow, and lots of sledding for Ellie. They moved some of the sledders up the hill to another starting position, including Ellie; which she was very excited about. It made the runs seem even faster.

After the final sliding session, the coaches met with the athletes and parents, and gave them a brief rundown on what was next. They started with 700 athletes who tried out from around the country. About 70 were invited to Lake Placid for the screening session. From this group they will pick about 30 to be part of the Junior National Developmental Team, The D Team is what they are known as. They will make those picks between March and May, and may have some kids come back in March to see them on the track again.

So, we’ll see what happens from here.

If nothing else, it was a great experience. Ellie had a lot of fun. More fun then I thought she’d have.
After we got all the info we went and had lunch downtown, picked up some souvenirs and got on the road back to Vermont. It wasn’t long before Ellie was knocked out in the passenger seat, a clear sign of how hard she worked throughout the week.

An early wake up call the next day got us to the airport and on our way back home. The flights were uneventful, but without the TV in the back of each seat the entertainment options were a bit more limited. So, Delta clearly won the battle of the flights for this trip.

And the return to more traditional sports didn’t take long. After landing about 1:00 p.m. Ellie wanted to join her school basketball team for their 3:00 p.m. practice. I don’t know how much of it was wanting to play basketball or how much of it was wanting to see her friends.

Then, the weekend was upon us and Ellie’s final soccer tournament of 2018. The team finished in 3rd place, only a couple points away from playing in the Championship. It was a great first season playing at the comp level for soccer.
