Milwaukee to Chicago is only about 1.5 hour drive, but we needed to get to our hotel, hope our room was ready in Chicago, then head to the stadium. Well, all of that worked, but as it turned out, we had plenty of time. We experienced a 3.5 hour rain delay before the game started.
Lucky for us, the stadium food was good and we met Tom, a Sox season ticket holder and firefighter, sitting right behind us and he told stories and we talked to him for hours. The boys walked around the stadium a couple times and checked things out. That helped kill the time. All the workers were surprised they waiting so long and didn't call the game off, but the Phillies are in the playoff hunt and every game counts, so they wanted to get it in before heading out of town.
Spoiler alert, they would have been better having the game cancelled as the White Sox put on a show for the few thousand in attendance and won big with a couple 3-run HRs.In our baseball adventures, we've missed some big time players because of injury or just a day off (like Elly De La Cruz when we were in Cincy last year; Tatis Jr. when we were in San Diego; and Vlad Guerreo when the Blue Jays played in Anaheim.). So being able to see Bryce Harper, Schwarber, and Tre Turner even after all the rain was nice.
We had great seats, and apparently the White Sox don't care all that much where you sit once you get into the stadium, so you can basically sit anywhere. That's the benefit of not having very big attendance. And I'm sure the rain chanced a lot of people away.
So even though it was supposed to be an afternoon game, it was about a 7.5 hour day at the ballpark. So we bypassed going into downtown for dinner and headed back towards our hotel. We stopped at Giordano's Chicago Pizza, which was really good.
