Washington, DC

Full day.

We grabbed some Lime scooters and set off hoping to catch a good view of the White House — no such luck. Fencing wrapped around nearly every angle, and a guy watering his flowers nearby mentioned a second layer had gone up just the night before. So much for a decent photo.

We pivoted to the White House Visitor Center instead, which turned out to be a great consolation prize. It's packed with history on the building and the presidents who've lived there, and we ended up chatting with a couple of park rangers who happily buried us in trivia. Highlights: Grover Cleveland apparently had a taste for squirrel soup ("3–4 good size squirrels make a good soup"), Grant was partial to pudding, and there was no shortage of other odd presidential tidbits.

Riding the scooters down Pennsylvania Avenue was a treat of its own — the bike lane runs straight up the middle of the road, so it looks like you're aimed directly at the Capitol the whole way down.

From there it was on to the Air and Space Museum. Nowhere near enough time to see it all, so we hit the highlights and packed in as much as we could.

Next, we walked the National Mall to the Washington Monument for our 3:00 time slot and rode the elevator 500 feet up for another great view and tour.

Scooters again for the ride to the National Archives. Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Magna Carta.

Another 12,000 steps in the books.

We wrapped things up with pizza for dinner and a swim back at the hotel to close out the night.

Full, really full day.
